OUR APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Our sustainability framework – called WeCare4 – starts from our mission to enable energy efficiency and emission reduction, with more than 99% of our revenue and our R&D spend focus on emission reducing and zero-emission technologies. It is supported by two main sustainability pillars: Investing in a culture of innovation and Operating responsibly. This framework, together with strong governance and thoughtful commitments, fuel our environment, social and governance objectives and accountability.

LIVING OUR MISSION

Garrett Motion

Our mission is to deliver differentiated solutions that help our customers address tough challenges to achieve higher energy efficiency and lower emissions. This is the ethos across our portfolio — from our turbocharging technologies and electric boosting systems for internal combustion engines (ICE) and hybrid vehicles and their use of zero-emission fuels such as hydrogen, to our new zero-emission applications with Fuel Cell Compressor, E-Powertrain, and E-Cooling products for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEV).

We supportour customers to continually improve energy efficiency and emission reduction to meet increasingly stringent emission standards and reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions to achieve the ambitions of the Paris climate agreement. Furthermore, we are answering the unmet needs for the electric vehicle industry related to vehicle efficiency, weight, driving range, and thermal management. An emerging focus for our differentiated technologies is also in the industrial sector where achieving increased energy efficiency, hence improving total cost of ownership, and productivity is key to driving both environmental and operational performance.

HOW WE DRIVE A CULTURE OF INNOVATION

We’re dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every voice is valued. In the pursuit of enhancing employees voice, we have launched three new Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) globally. These ERGs, focusing on cultural mosaic, LGBTIQ+, and diverse abilities, join our established women in Garrett network in spearheading initiatives that celebrate, advance and advocate for our diverse workforce. Each group is committed to creating spaces that promote understanding, support, and empowerment for all employees.

zero-emission technology for vehicles

The health and safety of all Garrett employees and contractors that work at our facilities is a top priority. All Garrett manufacturing sites are certified to the global Health & Safety management standard ISO 45001 and we continuously focus on identifying and eliminting risks.

Each year, we invest in health and safety projects to further strengthen safety across our sites and engaging employees through different activations and campaigns such as the annual HSE Week. In 2023, we initatied a “Safety Stand Down” campaign to enhance the Health and Safety focus at our sites by encouraging colleagues to identify improvement opportunities.

The focused effort to ensure a safe workplace during 2023 resulted in 67% reduction in the Total Reportable Case Incident Rate compared to the previous year, and significantly below industry benchmarks.

We are focused on reducing the impact of our operations and have committed to a science-based* Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reduction target for our global operations. The target is to reduce our GHG emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 46.2% by 2030, with a 2019 baseline. Our approach to this reduction is to focus on energy management and efficiency as well as on-site renewable energy (e.g. solar).

*A science-based target means that it aligns to the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels.

We reduced our GHG emissions by 3.3% (Scopes 1+2) in 2023. Read more in our latest Sustainability Report.

We focus our attention on becoming more efficient in everything we do, including energy consumption. By investing in energy-saving projects throughout our sites, we both reduce the emission caused by our energy consumption and reduce our costs to operate over time. All our manufacturing sites are certified to the global energy management standard ISO 50001.

In 2023, we achieved a 7% decrease in energy consumption in our operations.

At Garrett, we focus on responsible use of resources across our operations.
Resources: The manufacturing process of turbochargers uses more than 90% metals, primarily iron and aluminum, and we constantly seek opportunities to reduce the weight of the individual turbochargers we manufacture, which minimizes the impact on natural resources. The efficient resource use is also a key differentiator of our Zero-emission technologies.
Waste: We work to reduce waste generation at every stage of our manufacturing processes, and implementing recycling, reuse, and responsible disposal practices.
Water: Our sites predominantly use water for sanitary, cleaning and domestic purposes, whereas a smaller proportion is used in production and R&D processes such as component cleaning and cooling during machining operations and turbocharger testing processes.

In 2023, concerted efforts led to a 12% reduction in water withdrawal across all our facilities. Read more in our 2023 Sustainability Report.
