Description:
Commercial vehicles (CVs) play a critical role in carbon emissions in the transport sector. Beyond CO₂ reduction, electric powertrains present a strategic opportunity as they can enable more competitive Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) compared to diesel — largely due to lower energy and maintenance costs. This shift must, however, preserve key attributes essential to CV applications, such as an appropriate range for the mission profile, reliability, and efficiency. While CVs have unique operational demands, they also share common goals with passenger vehicles, including minimizing the use of sensitive materials like rare earths, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing overall sustainability. Garrett’s high-speed motor and inverter technology offers a compelling solution to address these challenges.
This paper presents our approach to developing a high-power-density, reliable, and efficient eBeam portfolio for commercial vehicles, leveraging our proven high-speed inverter and motor architecture. With a confirmed serial production award, the technology described will represent an industry first in its category, marking a significant milestone in CV electrification. With reduced system weight, our eBeam solutions contribute to improved TCO by enhancing both payload capacity and energy efficiency. Reliability is ensured through a deep understanding of real-world duty cycles, while efficiency is achieved via a compact 2-in-1 motor-inverter design and an optimized gearbox. Scalability is a cornerstone of our strategy, enabling flexible deployment across a wide range of CV platforms and mission profiles. This paper outlines the technical choices and design philosophy behind our differentiated eBeam solutions, demonstrating how they support the electrification of commercial vehicles while delivering tangible economic and environmental benefits.
