Turbocharger system diagnostics guide

TURBOCHARGER SYSTEM CHECK
External Oil Leak

Check the oil level and oil sump overfill

Action: The turbocharger should only be replaced if damaged. In most cases it can remain on the vehicle after the issue has been corrected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

External Oil Leak

Check oil pipes and compressor inlet for defective connections or seals

Action: The turbocharger should only be replaced if damaged. In most cases it can remain on the vehicle after the issue has been corrected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

External Air or Gas Leak

Check for tightening, alignment and integrity of connections between air and exhaust circuit components

Action: The turbocharger should only be replaced if damaged. In most cases it can remain on the vehicle after the issue has been corrected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

External Air or Gas Leak

Check for absence of leak, damage or clogging on air and exhaust circuit components

Action: The turbocharger should only be replaced if damaged. In most cases it can remain on the vehicle after the issue has been corrected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Blue Smoke (Internal Oil Leak)

Check oil level and quality
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if heavy oil deposit affects its rotation and function. Inlet & outlet pipe need to be replaced as well.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Blue Smoke (Internal Oil Leak)

Look for heavy deposit on air intake line (engine blow-by)

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if heavy oil deposit affects its rotation and function. Inlet & outlet pipe need to be replaced as well.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Blue Smoke (Internal Oil Leak)

Check if air or oil filters are restricted or blocked
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if heavy oil deposit affects its rotation and function. Inlet & outlet pipe need to be replaced as well.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Blue Smoke (Internal Oil Leak)

Inspect for damage to air and oil lines

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if heavy oil deposit affects its rotation and function. Inlet & outlet pipe need to be replaced as well.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Blue Smoke (Internal Oil Leak)

Verify engine pressure is within specification
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if heavy oil deposit affects its rotation and function. Inlet & outlet pipe need to be replaced as well.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Black Smoke (Combustion Issue)

Check the injection system for malfunction
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: If damaged, the turbo charger must be replaced.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Black Smoke (Combustion Issue)

Check for clogged air filter or air intake failure
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: If damaged, the turbo charger must be replaced.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

Black Smoke (Combustion Issue)

Check for damage to wheels and housing volutes

Action: If damaged, the turbo charger must be replaced.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

White Smoke (Internal Water Leak)

Verify it is not present at engine start only (internal condensation disappears after engine is hot)
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if a water circuit leak is detected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

White Smoke (Internal Water Leak)

Check the state of the cylinder head gasket, coolant may leak into the combustion chamber
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if a water circuit leak is detected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

White Smoke (Internal Water Leak)

Verify correct engine block pressure or cracks
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if a water circuit leak is detected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.

White Smoke (Internal Water Leak)

If possible (and applicable), pressurize the water circuit with a vacuum pump and verify its integrity
Note: Refer OEM service manual for further details

Action: The turbo needs to be replaced if a water circuit leak is detected.
If issue is not resolved continue analysis.
