Garrett Hosts U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Andrei Iancu at its High-Tech Turbocharger Facility in Bucharest to Discuss IP Protection

BUCHAREST, Romania, Oct. 29, 2019 – Garrett Motion Inc. (NYSE: GTX) welcomed Andrei Iancu, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and his team to its Bucharest, Romania manufacturing facility, Garrett’s largest turbo manufacturing facility in the world.

Supporting passenger vehicle sales in Europe and Asia for more than a dozen auto makers, the Bucharest facility is the birthplace for many of Garrett’s newest technology and process innovations that help the company produce more than 50,000 turbos a day globally in support of the automotive industry.

Under Secretary Iancu received a tour of the facility and spent time with Garrett engineers who have successfully contributed to the company’s more than 1,400 issued or pending patents that have made Garrett a global leader in turbocharging technology for more than 65 years.

The Danger of Counterfeit Turbos

Garrett serves more than 40 global auto makers and has an existing install base of more than 100 million turbochargers globally. Its market-leading turbos deliver significantly better whole-life value than lower-cost non-genuine alternatives when taking into account reliability, performance, fuel efficiency and product life.

Garrett turbos are engineered to meet the exacting original specifications of manufacturers and deliver performance levels not possible with non-genuine turbos. Using an inferior turbo can have significant consequences for the engine and vehicle performance as a whole.

Examples of serious issues include low flow and pressure, which causes a poor response in the vehicle; an overtly rich diesel fuel/air mix, which can cause excessively high temperature, thus also damaging the turbo as well as the engine; high flow/pressure, which causes over-speeding of the turbo, wheel bursting and damage to the turbo and engine; and excessive boost pressure, which causes physical damage to the engine.

Using non-genuine turbochargers can also negatively affect engine efficiency and the effect on the environment. These potential problems include reduced performance leading to lower vehicle value and poor drivability on the road; increased fuel consumption leading to higher running costs and greatly increased whole-life expenditure; increased emissions leading to higher CO2 and NOx output, which could prohibit vehicle use following statutory inspections; conflict with the engine management system leading to vehicles running in reduced power safety mode; and creating immediate conflict with the engine control unit on engine start-up.
