The Garrett Legacy

John Clifford Garrett, an engineer driven by a passion for aviation and innovation, founded the company that would become a cornerstone of turbocharging technology. From the start, Garrett has led the way in engine boosting, shaping the automotive industry with aerospace-grade expertise.

Turbocharging’s story began in 1955, when Garrett’s T15 turbo paired with Caterpillar’s D9 crawler. In 1962, the Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo Rocket became the world’s first turbocharged production car. By 1967, Deere had chosen the Garrett T04 turbo for its tractors and soon the entire industry followed, recognizing the benefits of better performance, greater torque, and improved fuel efficiency for commercial diesel engines.

Turbo Goes Mass-Market and Racing

By the mid-1970s, turbocharging had become standard for trucks. Today, nearly all commercial diesel vehicles rely on advanced turbochargers. For passenger cars, Garrett’s variable nozzle turbine (VNT) technology took turbocharging mainstream in the 1990s, optimizing performance, boosting fuel efficiency, cutting emissions, and improving responsiveness.

Garrett’s legacy in motorsport also spans decades and the world’s premier racing circuits, boosting Formula 1 with Scuderia Ferrari, Formula 2, FIA World Rally, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Garrett Motion celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025, with a powerful moment in Times Square, New York — President and CEO Olivier Rabiller rang the Nasdaq Opening Bell as Garrett’s name lit up the Nasdaq Tower. More than a celebration, it marks a defining milestone in Garrett’s journey — a tribute to its legacy of innovation and a symbol of its future: pushing the boundaries of technology to serve a world in motion.

Today, nearly every major global automaker uses Garrett technologies, with around 150 million vehicles equipped worldwide.
