Racing At Altitude With The BBi Autosport Porsche Hill Climb Car!

The Garrett Motion twin turbocharged BBi Autosport Porsche 911 Pikes Peak hill climb car completed the event with an impressive 2nd place overall as well as breaking the Time Attack 1 class record by over 14 seconds.  Piloted by Raphael Astier, a veteran of Pikes Peak and professional rally driving, he completed the course in 9 minutes and 23.721 seconds. Racing at altitude takes a lot of skill and a dedicated team. Here is an inside look behind the scene of this incredible build.

The crew at BBI Auto Sport used twin Garrett G25-660 turbochargers to power the 991.1 GT3 3.8L Cup Car engine. Turbochargers are important when racing at elevations like Pikes Peak because a naturally aspirated engine will lose 3% of the total engine horsepower for every 1000 ft increase in elevation. A turbocharged engine can make up for the decreased oxygen / air density by forcing more air into the engine intake to keep horsepower levels consistent as the car racer to high elevations.

What is Pikes Peak
