Garrett Turbo Innovation History and Future On Display at 2019 Vienna Motor Symposium

  • Garrett showcasing next breakthrough technology at Vienna with E-Turbo demo car
  • Variable geometry architecture introduced in 2017 at Vienna now accounts for more than 50% of all requests received globally for gas turbocharger applications

 VIENNA, May 16, 2019 – Garrett Motion Inc. (NYSE: GTX), a leading differentiated technology provider into the automotive industry, is back at the 40th International Vienna Motor Symposium to unveil an E-Turbo demonstration vehicle as well as gas and diesel turbo technologies that continue to capture considerable interest from global auto makers seeking to keep pace with a regulatory environment requiring better fuel economy and reduced emissions.

Garrett turbo solutions help improve powertrain performance and drivability. In Vienna, Garrett is highlighting its ongoing development of electrical turbochargers that attendees can experience through a test drive. Working in combination with 2.0L gas engines, Garrett’s E-Turbo solutions offer an alternative to traditional 3.0L diesel and 4.5L to 5.0L gas engine architectures in providing exceptional transient performance and torque as well as enabling improved fuel economy and emissions. Garrett’s first E-Turbo is anticipated to appear on production vehicle launching in 2021.

Garrett is also displaying its variable geometry turbo architecture for gasoline engines in Vienna. Originally developed and launched with VW Group across a number of models in 2017 and earning an industry PACE award, this technology which Garrett introduced for improved turbo diesel performance decades ago has been successfully evolved to work in combination with the advanced Miller combustion cycle and higher temperature gasoline environments. Given the success of the VW program and next generation advancements on the way, Garrett expects more than 50% of all new gas turbo programs will feature variable geometry designs by 2025. The Garrett Gasoline VNT Turbo boasts 68% turbine efficiency, helps reduce CO2 emissions by 5% to 10%, and is about 30% faster time to torque.

Garrett GTD22 VNT Turbo with Ball Bearing Technology For Diesel Engines

Garrett’s fourth generation turbodiesel design with variable geometry (VNT) offers new aerodynamics and bearing system for better low-end torque and transient response and greater exhaust gas recirculation capability and reliability. Developed for passenger and light commercial vehicle applications, this Garrett turbo offers 2% to 3% better fuel economy, improved emissions especially at cold start, and an improved performance range compatible with exhaust gas temperatures up to 860C. As the global leader covering 3.0L diesel engine applications for more than 20 years, this turbo provides an ideal architecture for robust operation regardless of climate and altitude with consistent torque and towing capabilities.

Garrett TwoStage System with Sheet Metal Turbine Housing

Garrett’s next generation of TwoStage architecture with enhanced thermal management technology offers improved performance while enabling greater reductions in NOx emissions. By pairing two VNT turbos with electric actuation for faster reaction, this design targets mid-size diesel passenger cars with 2.0 to 2.2L engine sizes seeking performance with improved emissions. Garrett’s design has improved power density by 17% and low-end torque by 10%. The new design also features a double-wall sheet metal housing, as opposed to a casting, for the low pressure turbine stage and has reduced weight and increased operating temperatures by 20 to 30C. This results in 15% to 20% less NOx emissions to help auto makers meet more stringent Euro 6 regulations.

Double Axle VNT Turbocharger (GT35)

Garrett’s double-axle variable geometry/nozzle turbo (DAVNT) is a high power density workhorse suitable for medium duty commercial vehicles seeking performance with fuel economy. It offers up to 2% improved fuel economy and enhanced power and torque. When used with Garrett’s ball bearing technology, fuel economy improvements are doubled to 4% with similar reductions in CO2 emissions as a result. Improved durability and thermos efficiency also enhances engine braking capability making safer hill descents and improved brake pad life possible for the vehicle. Multiple applications are launching with this turbo in 2019.

TwoStage Electric Compressor for Fuel Cells

Garrett is also displaying its two-stage air compressor development for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Fuel cell energy is a zero-emission technology with great potential. Launched with the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell vehicle in 2016, Garrett’s fuel cell compressor continues to attract a lot of industry attention and Garrett has more than 10 hydrogen fuel cell related programs in development globally and is aggressively promoting its first adoption in China by the end of the year. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have range capabilities and refueling times that more closely reflect those of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. In addition, Garrett envisions future developments will bring down manufacturing costs significantly further enhancing their appeal.
