Garrett Develops Ultra Responsive Boosting System to Support Next Wave of Global CO2 Emission Targets

  • New boosting solution pairs with lean Miller Cycle combustion in gasoline engines
  • Garrett solution helps to deliver 15% CO2 reduction for EU sponsored project

Garrett has created a new boosting system with greatly improved transient response as part of an international team of industry and research organizations participating in the Particle Reduced, Efficient Gasoline Engine (PaREGEn) project – part of the EU Horizon 2020 Programme –developed to pioneer a new generation of low CO2 emitting gasoline engines for mid-level to premium vehicles.

The project, involving 17 of the world’s leading automotive organisations, led to the development of a turbocharged advanced Miller Cycle combustion engine which is on track to deliver the same performance as a baseline Jaguar XE 2.0 litre vehicle but with a 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions, complying with upcoming EU6d RDE requirements and with particulates measured down to 10 nanometres in size.

Garrett engineers played a key role in developing the state-of-the-art lean-burn, high compression ratio engine, designing a new variable geometry/nozzle turbine (VNT) turbo to be paired with a downstream 48V e-compressor to help optimize fuel efficiency without compromising performance. The system was a key enabler for one of the PaREGEn engine’s primary objectives – the ability to ‘switch’ from stoichiometric ratios of equal air to fuel amounts (lambda 1) to lean combustion modes using down to half the amount of fuel per amount of air (lambda 2) while maintaining uncompromised brake torque and power.

Garrett’s quick response boost technology delivered the required low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation at high speed and high load while maintaining the low-speed torque of the base engine. This feat was achieved by Garrett engineers using their compressor and turbine expertise to create a map wide enough to deliver enough charge mass for low-speed torque as well as improved high-speed stoichiometric performance.

Initial tests indicate that this combustion system, which includes innovations in fuel injection, dual camshaft phasing and continuously variable valve lift, has the potential to realize substantial reductions in both fuel consumption and engine-out emissions – with the promise of significant CO2 improvements in medium-to-premium gasoline cars.

Innovations such as the PaREGEn engine are critical to the auto industry meeting incoming emissions standards because the internal combustion engine, optimized through electrification and hybridization, will remain the clear leader in powertrain development for the next decade and beyond.

The PaREGEn project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under Grant Agreement no. 723954.

Garrett is a project Partner for EU H2020 “Particle Reduced, Efficient Gasoline Engines” (PaREGEn)

The overall project targets a 15% CO2 reduction versus the baseline engine with uncompromised performance attributes while respecting EU6d emissions limits and PN emissions down to 10nm.

Garrett’s contribution to the Project has been to innovate and supply a hybrid boosting system combining an Electrical Compressor and a Gasoline VNT with Integrated Wastegate.

The aim is to demonstrate an ultra-high-efficiency gasoline engine applying a high compression ratio and dilute combustion.

The technology is now under evaluation both on the engine and in a demonstration vehicle.
