GXR47 Platform Validation
Independent dyno testing of the Garrett GXR47 platform, conducted by Bruno Massel using the GXR47-80 configuration, demonstrates the airflow and performance potential of the GXR47 turbo architecture. The Garrett G-XRace GXR47-80 116 turbocharger was evaluated on a 3.0L 2JZ (183 cubic inch) engine and demonstrated a significant 11% performance improvement over the previous G-Series G47 setup.
During dyno testing, the GXR47-80 produced 1,512 rear wheel horsepower at 55 psi of boost, even with approximately 10 percent converter slip. According to Bruno, the new GXR47 delivered approximately 150 rear wheel horsepower more than the previous G47 combination, with additional power still available in the setup.
Additional test data showed 54 psi backpressure to 55 psi boost. The previous G47 combination produced 49 psi of boost at the track, while the GXR47 achieved 55 psi on the dyno with additional boost still available. On this combination, each additional pound of boost corresponds to roughly 25 horsepower.
These results demonstrate that the GXR47-80 represents a significant step forward in airflow capability, power potential, and overall turbocharger performance for competitive drag racing applications. Actual results will vary depending on engine combination, converter selection, calibration strategy, fuel, and vehicle setup.
Testing results shown were achieved using the Garrett GXR47-80 configuration. Performance of other GXR47 variants, including the GXR47-76, will vary depending on compressor selection, engine combination, calibration, and vehicle setup.
Compressor Map Overlay Explained
The compressor map overlay illustrates the airflow and pressure ratio differences between the G-XRace turbocharger and the G-Series design. In key operating regions, the G-XRace compressor provides increased airflow capability at comparable pressure ratios, expanding the usable operating range and supporting higher horsepower potential where engine demand allows.
To fully realize these gains, ECU calibration is necessary to optimize performance when upgrading from a previous-generation turbocharger.
