On the Opportunities and Challenges of High-Speed Electric Powertrain and Garrett Differentiated Technology

Authors: P. De Araujo; H. Zheng; S. Jordan, F. Tomanec, J. Pikula, A. Borra, M. Rakoci; A. Bouaita

Abstract: This paper introduces Garrett’s new high-power density eAxle concept (inverter, electric motor & reducer), leveraging advanced high-speed motor technology to bring a step change in eAxle performance and compactness to the market. Building on Garrett’s extensive expertise in high-speed rotating machinery, this new concept exhibits an industry-leading power density. Compared to industry reference, a 20% packaging reduction and a 30% weight reduction are achieved, while maintaining best in class efficiency and NVH. The concept not only minimizes overall material usage, it also drastically reduces the need for sensitive materials like copper and rare earth elements by demonstrating an average reduction of ~30% against market reference. All these features make this system a key asset to address today’s industry challenges.

Based on this technology, Garrett has developed a scalable eAxle portfolio, covering a wide range of power and featuring both 400V and 800V. These include high-speed motors operating at speeds exceeding 30,000 rpm, high switching-frequency inverters, and a specially designed high gear-ratio reducer. By systematically addressing all challenges brought by high-speed, the solution offers leading power density, efficiency, and NVH performance. Its outstanding characteristics make it suitable for both premium, performance and mainstream application within B, C and D segments. Garrett’s high-power density eAxle represents a significant advancement in the pursuit of more lightweight, compact, powerful and sustainable electric vehicle propulsion.
