Garrett Motion’s IT Cyber Security team in India has opened a window into top-level digital systems and information protection for 20 university students through an immersive virtual experience that harnessed the power of online innovation and creative thinking.

The seven-day cyber security workshop, developed by Garrett as part of its WeCare4 sustainability program, attracted interest from more than 350 student candidates from Pune’s College of Engineering and the Thiagarajar College of Engineering in Madurai. Through an online hackathon, 20 young women and men were selected to join an exclusive seven-day learning journey that included five days of digital workshops and a two-day day panel presentation where the students got an opportunity to interact with and learn from the Garrett cyber security experts.

“Despite the obvious challenges presented by 2020, we were determined to give these talented young people an opportunity to broaden their career horizons by offering them an insight into the critical role that cyber security plays across the entire business landscape,” said Satheesh Kumar PRV, Garrett’s Chief Information Security Officer. “Although presented virtually, the workshop structure enabled the students to learn from and interact with Garrett experts with deep cyber security knowledge and experience in enterprise, manufacturing and cloud environments.”

Demand for cyber security skills is growing rapidly across all industries and commerce in-step with accelerating digital connectivity. Thus, topics like Application and Cloud Security, Forensics and Threat Detection, Identity Management, Security Compliance and Cyber Security Incident Response aren’t just teaching material but are cyber security elements that are shaping our digital future.

“I am a part of Information security club in my college and have done some small experiments in the Information security domain. But the workshop content and structure helped me improve my knowledge a lot more in cyber security domain,” said Sundaresh, a student from Madurai’s Thiagarjar College of Engineering.

The educational program concluded with 20 thoughtfully created student presentations that focused on three tailor-made industry-critical use cases. Based on the combination of participation during the workshop and panel presentation, five young people were selected to join the company’s internship program next month.

“The best thing about the workshop was the explanation of concepts with examples and real case scenarios,” said Akanksha Mahajan from College of Engineering, Pune, who was one of the five students selected for Garrett Internship Program. “And there was so much to learn from the instructors as well as peers.”

During their internship throughout 2021 they will be supporting real-world cyber security projects that allow them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical skills. All the participants of the workshop were presented with a certificate of completion by Garrett.

“The student feedback was wonderful, and the workshop created positive interest in Garrett as a great place to work and also expand career horizons by bridging the gap between university learning and real-world scenarios,” said Beena Dixit, Garrett India’s Director of HR. “From our perspective, we were delighted with the levels of engagement we saw, which underlined the value of our community outreach programs in STEM and our ongoing university relations.”
