Garrett Motion is applying its leadership in turbocharger technologies to a carbon-neutral fueled race car that aims to inspire a new era of motorsports.

Mazda Spirit Racing’s Mazda3 Bio concept car will be competing in the 2023 Super Taikyu endurance series in Japan to promote sustainable motor racing and encourage wider participation among emerging driver talent.

The car, boosted by a specially configured Garrett GTX series turbo, will run in the ST-Q class from the spring of 2023 as well as taking part in demonstration tests of carbon-neutral fuel. Powering the vehicle is SUSTEO 100% renewable fuels, which is comprised of waste oil and used cooking oil.

Motorsport technicians at Garrett re-engineered the GTE20 VNT turbo architecture by applying high-temperature durable specifications for the biodiesel powertrain, per the requirements from Mazda Spirit Racing.

The Mazda3 program, based on Mazda’s “human-centric” philosophy, encourages participation in sustainable motorsports in step with its wider commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050.
