Garrett Launches Industry-First Electric Compressor for Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle

ROLLE, Switzerland – June 14, 2016 – Garrett Motion Inc. (NYSE: GTX) formerly Honeywell  Transportation Systems has drawn upon its engineering competencies in the automotive and aerospace industries to create a new two-stage electrical compressor used by Honda Motor Company for its hydrogen-powered Clarity Fuel Cell vehicle.

Increasingly stringent CO2 emissions and the need to reduce dependency on fossil fuels are quickly creating demand for alternate sources of energy. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are one alternative for providing sustainable, zero-emissions transportation.

Honda recently announced the Clarity Fuel Cell will feature an anticipated U.S. EPA driving range exceeding 300 miles and a refueling time of about 3-5 minutes.

Benefits of the Garrett TwoStage Electric Compressor for Fuel Cells

  • Compact Packaging – Garrett’s TwoStage Electric Compressor eliminates previous powertrain sizing issues typically associated with fuel cell vehicles. Garrett’s high-pressure technology helps the Clarity Fuel Cell retain the interior cabin space of a true 5-passenger sedan by reducing the overall size of the fuel cell stack to one which is comparable to a V-6 engine. According to Honda, the Clarity’s fuel cell stack is 33 percent more compact than its predecessor.
  • Unequaled Performance – An industry first, the two-stage Garrett compressor operates at a maximum of 4 bar (400 kPa) and has a continuous rating maximum of 20 kW – more than double the power density of comparable stacks available today while being highly efficient, lightweight and extremely compact. Honda reported that the Clarity Fuel Cell will have a 60 percent increase in power density compared with the outgoing Honda FCX Clarity.
  • Industry First Air Bearings – Garrett has achieved an automotive first by adapting its existing air foil bearing technology from its aerospace portfolio. These bearings are cooled by the machine’s own compressed air eliminating the potential for poisoning the fuel cell with any oils or greases and helping ensure zero emissions.
  • Unique Aerodynamics – Garrett has developed a unique aerodynamic configuration using aluminum wheels and housings to assist in critical high power density performance. The high speed aero design reduces mechanical losses and exceeds 70 percent peak efficiency providing the required performance at low speed operating points as well as at peak power.
  • Cost – An important part of the equation was making the cost of the technology affordable for automotive use. Garrett has transferred aerospace grade technology for air bearings and high speed motor design to the automotive domain. These technologies meet stringent automotive quality standards and allow for high-volume sales.
