Garrett Claims 18th Consecutive Victory at 24 Hours of Le Mans| Garrett turbo

  • Honeywell helps Porsche Motorsport LMP Team to third consecutive victory at famed race
  • Motorsport provides Honeywell with proving ground for new and emerging technologies

ROLLE, Switzerland, June 18, 2017 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON), the leading global developer of automotive turbochargers and a provider of differentiated Connected Automotive technology, is celebrating its 18th consecutive victory at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race while helping Porsche Motorsport LMP Team to its third consecutive win as well.

Honeywell’s nearly two decades of success at Le Mans reflects upon its ability provide turbocharging technology across a number of different powertrain configurations. This year, Honeywell supported all of the Porsche and Toyota factory-led teams competing in the top Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1) category. In addition, Honeywell was also a proud partner of the Ford factory team which finished second in the Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance (GTE) category.

“Honeywell has a long history of success in motorsports dating back several decades to the 1960s at Indianapolis and then across various types of racing all around the world,” said Honeywell Transportation Systems Chief Technology Officer Craig Balis. “Honeywell’s portfolio of leading-edge technologies coupled with the expertise of our engineers help teams meet the extreme demands of professional motorsports. The new gas and hybrid systems used at Le Mans — the highest level of endurance racing in the world — are signaling the opportunities to improve production vehicles for efficiency and emissions in the near future.”

This year at Le Mans, Honeywell provided the Porsche Motorsport LMP Team its gasoline DualBoost™ turbo technology with all-new compressor and turbine aerodynamics providing 20 to 30 percent better transient response for improved acceleration out of corners and more steady state engine power from higher turbine efficiency. This is achieved in an overall lighter weight package that is 10 to 20 percent smaller than an equivalent standard gasoline turbo.

Honeywell supported Toyota’s TS050 HYBRID with a 2.4L twin-turbo, direct injection V6 gas engine paired with a hybrid system. The smooth power generation and responsiveness of ultra-lightweight Honeywell gas turbochargers helped the Toyota team with improved drivability and throttle response, providing greater feel for the drivers. The Ford GT with a 3.6L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 used Honeywell turbochargers with its award-winning ball-bearing turbo technology. The turbo was custom engineered for the constant high temperatures and boost pressures encountered on the race track.
